Northeast Ohio communities are grappling with road salt shortages as repeated winter storms strain supplies and complicate snow and ice control efforts across the region.

Municipalities and private snow-removal operators alike report that stockpiles typically relied upon during peak winter months have been depleted earlier than expected. Heavy snowfall, frequent freeze-thaw cycles, and sustained cold temperatures have driven unusually high salt usage, forcing local governments to conserve remaining supplies.

As a result, many communities are prioritizing main roads, emergency routes, and high-traffic corridors, while residential side streets and secondary roads may receive reduced treatment.
