Thousands Gather for Memorial Service for Slain Lorain Police Officer

A solemn crowd filled Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland to honor the life and service of Lorain Police Officer Phillip Wagner, who was fatally wounded during a violent ambush. The 35-year-old officer had been responding to a call about a suspicious vehicle when he and two fellow officers came under fire. Wagner later died from his injuries.

The two other officers, Peter Gale and Brent Payne, were seriously wounded but survived. The gunman, identified as heavily armed and carrying explosives, was killed at the scene.

The memorial service drew thousands of people—officers from across Ohio and neighboring states, city and state officials, and members of the public—united in grief and gratitude.

Wagner’s death sent shockwaves through the Lorain community, prompting an outpouring of support for his family, colleagues, and the department he served with pride.

During the service, Wagner was remembered as a devoted public servant and a loving father to three children. His dedication to his work, his humility, and his quiet commitment to others were recalled by colleagues and city leaders. The ceremony featured honor guards, bagpipes, a police motorcade, and a video tribute.

Lorain’s mayor announced that July 24 will be permanently recognized as a day to honor Wagner’s life and legacy. Officer Brent Payne, still recovering from his injuries, attended the service in a wheelchair. His presence added a poignant layer to an already emotional ceremony, with many attendees visibly moved by the shared loss.

Throughout Lorain, residents lined the streets for Wagner’s funeral procession. Signs, flags, and gestures of respect were visible along the route. In the days following the shooting, vigils and memorials sprang up across the city, reflecting the deep impact of Wagner’s loss.

The suspect behind the ambush, 46-year-old Michael Parker, was found with multiple firearms, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and explosive materials. Authorities are still investigating his motives.

As the city of Lorain mourns, the Wagner family and the police department are receiving ongoing support from the community. Officer Wagner is being remembered not only for how he died, but for how he lived—with quiet courage, a strong sense of duty, and a deep love for his family and community.
